David Hurlin received his Master of Fine Arts in Sculpture and Intermedia from the University of Iowa. With a background in drum set, percussion, and tabla, David’s current work pushes solo performances and collaborations to the breaking point of drumming, which operate at the intersection of sound art, sculpture, instrument building, improvisation, experimental music, movement, and performance art.

Recent projects include performances in Inside the Spider's Body by Joey Fauerso at the Bemis Center in Omaha; Sound is a Body Held, a sound and movement durational performance with Tony Orrico at Signs & Symbols Gallery in New York City and RIMI/IMIR Scenekunst in Norway; and work with Rin Peisert’s performance art group, Relative Intensity Noise, at Elastic Arts in Chicago and the Momentary Museum in Bentonville, Arkansas.

After years of teaching at the university level, David now channels his decades of creative experience into mentoring both professional artists and individuals who believe they’re “not creative.” His approach is rooted in the philosophy that creativity flourishes when we let go of the need for control and give ourselves permission to explore both good and bad ideas with non-judgement. This liberates the mind from inner criticism and invites a state of flow, play, and spontaneous creativity. His teaching and philosophies have proven transformative for artists and non-artists alike.
